August: Digital Sabbath Challenge

The weather is nice and August is the perfect time for a Digital Sabbath.

sab·bath /'sabəTH/ noun

  1. a day of religious observance and abstinence from work, kept by Jews from Friday evening to Saturday evening, and by most Christians on Sunday.

  2. a supposed annual midnight meeting of witches with the Devil.

Just to clarify, we're going with definition number one here. But, perhaps we'll revisit number two another time??



For the month of August, I will give up all electronics/technology on the weekends. Now, to the best of my knowledge (according to Google) I don't carry the behaviors of a tech addict. But, I have found myself in an Instagram, YouTube, Facebook vortex many a time and perhaps I can find more creative uses of my mental space.

The best way to put it is, I've recently gained too much tech weight and the best way to lose it is to cut it out.

Here are my rules:
Effective Friday 6pm-Sunday 6pm, the following things are not allowed:
- Cell Phones
- TV
- Laptop
- Internet

* Cell phones will be allowed to make calls, but no text messages! AHHHH
*Going to the movies will be allowed because it counts as an activity.
*Kindles or Ipads will only be allowed with no wi-fi connection and can only be used to read e-books.
*If at a restaurant or bar that happens to have TVs on, you will have to leave. JUST KIDDING. Just try to seat yourself where you're not directly facing the screen. 


It's just the weekends, but this is going to be extremely hard because we rely on technology so much! There will have to be some definite planning ahead to set ourselves up for success. 

If you're like me and save some work for the weekends, we're going to have to find a way to finish it all during the week. This will take some time management and task priority skills. Start by creating two task list: one for the day and one for the week. As you check off your completed items of the day, start on the bigger projects from your weekly list. 

Another problem I foresee is that my husband and I like to fall asleep with the TV on. It's a bad habit, but we love having "The Office" in the background as we drift to slumber. I think the best way to tackle this is to have (dare I say) a book to read. And yes, my husband will have to join this challenge with me. I'll make it up to him by taking him out for ice cream, which I will have to print out the coupons ahead of time. I encourage you to drag your significant other along as well! 


The last thing that will help is to carry a small notepad to jot down notes and reminders. I usually take notes on my phone because I have the memory like Dory. Looks like I'll be writing things down the old fashion way on the weekends. Additionally, not being able to Google anything is going to be a true test!



Technology has a bad rap for causing society to be incapable of human connection and that may be the reason why Digital Sabbaths have become so popular. In my personal experience, I've been able to connect with a lot of people. I've been able to catch up with family and friends I haven't seen in a while or learn about events that I'd be interested in. Additionally, by virtue of my job, I have to connect with people. So lack of human connection isn't the issue for me, but what I'm hoping to gain from this challenge is TIME. I hope to spend my time in a way where I find engagement in my environment and reinvigorate my mental space.
